As fate would have it, Quetzalcoatl (Ehécatl, the Cosmic Wind) fell deeply in love with Mayahuel during one of his visits to Jalisco. After days of contemplating his feelings, one clear night, he decided to sneak through the stars and convince her to escape with him. Together, they would share their virtues with the people and write love stories. Mayahuel agreed, and that very night, they fled together.
To protect their love from the wrath of her evil grandmother, the lovers transformed into a tree with two intertwining branches, swearing eternal devotion. But the grandmother, realizing Mayahuel was missing, gathered other demons to search for her. When they found the tree, the grandmother shattered the branch where Mayahuel had hidden, scattering her essence among the Tzitzimime demons, who devoured her in an instant.
Devastated, Ehécatl gathered what remained of his beloved and buried her in the land where, miraculously, the first agave plant grew. The plant's roots spread across the earth, its bluish-green hue forever marking the fields of Tequila.
